Color data contained in a HunterLab MiniScan or MiniScan XE datalog can easily be transferred to Windows 3.1 or 3.11 spreadsheet programs for manipulation by using the Windows 3.1 or 3.11 Terminal program. Instructions are provided below.
1. Use an RS-232C cable to connect the MiniScan to the desired communications port of the computer.
2. Enter the Instrument Setup of the MiniScan. Note the baud rate.
3. Enter the Windows Terminal program by double-clicking on the Terminal icon in the Accessories program group.
4. Choose Communications from the Settings menu as shown in Figure 1.
5. Set the baud rate and other parameters for the proper COM port to match the MiniScan setup.
Data Bits should be set to “8,” Stop Bits to “1,” Parity to “None,” and Flow Control to
“Xon/Xoff” (see Figure 2). Click on OK.
6. Choose Save from the File menu and save the settings as MINISCAN.TRM. In the future, you can use these settings by selecting Open from the File menu and choosing this file name.
7. Choose Receive Text File from the Transfers menu.
8. Enter a file name ending in .TXT to the drive and directory desired (see Figure 3).
9. Press and hold the Print key of the MiniScan until it beeps twice. Release. The data will be sent to the computer and will flash across the Terminal screen. When data transfer is complete, the MiniScan will beep twice again. The screen shown will be similar to that in Figure 4.
10. Click on Stop in the lower left corner of the Terminal screen.
11. Exit the Terminal program.
12. Enter your spreadsheet program.
13. Open the file as a text file. Most programs (examples provided here are using Microsoft Excel Version 5.0) will automatically convert the .TXT file contents into a format usable to the spreadsheet after asking several questions concerning the formatting. For Excel, choose to enter the data as a Fixed Width (columns with spaces in between). An example is shown below.
