Test Methods referenced in HunterLab Instrument Technical Specifications Follow
FAQ: “We have a customer requesting which standards specification applies to the RSIN and RSEX measurement modes of the UltraScan PRO. From the equipment specs is see several standards listed but we're not familiar with them all so I'm hoping you could shed some light on this.”
The world governing body for color and appearance measurement (color science) is the CIE - Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage and the fundamental publication for color measurement is CIE Publication 15:2004 - Colorimetry. All industrial standards related to colorimetry flow from this documents.
CIE Publication 15:2004 Colorimetry
CIE - Commission Internationale de L’Éclairage, Wien, Austria www.cie.co.at
This method describes the basis for industrial color measurement.
There are in access of 40 industrial standards bodies around the world that have some colorimetric or optical methods but the four with the most complete reference back to CIE Publication 15:2004 Colorimetry are ISO, ASTM, DIN and JIS.
Here is a breakdown of the references for reflectance color.
ISO 7724-1 Paints and varnishes -- Colorimetry -- Part 1: Principles
ISO - International Organization for Standardization, Geneva Switzerland www.iso.ch
ISO 7724-1 includes colorimetric terms, calculation of various CIE color scales and specification of instrument geometry.
ASTM E1164 Standard Practice for Obtaining Data for Object-Color Evaluation
ASTM - American Society of Testing and Materials, West Conshohocken, PA USA www.astm.org
ASTM E1164 provides a complete description of colorimetric measurement.
DIN 5033 Colorimetry
DIN - Deutches Institut für Normung eV., Berlin, Germany www.din.de standards available at www.beuth.de
DIN 5033 is a multi-part specification for the CIE system of color measurement of materials, lights and visual evaluation of color.
JIS Z 8722 Methods of colour measurement - Reflecting and transmitting objects
JIS - Japanese Industrial Standards are available from JSA Japanese Standards Association http://www.jsa.or.jp/default_english.asp
JIS Z 8722 Condition C is a multi-part specification defining color measurement in reflectance.
HunterLab sphere instruments can measure color in transmittance as well as reflectance. We reference to the same or similar industrial color methods for transmittance color measurement.
Our sphere instruments can also measure transmittance haze or scattering, an appearance phenomenon separate from color and we cite ASTM D1003 Part B.
ASTM D1003 Haze of Transparent Plastics
ASTM - American Society of Testing and Materials, West Conshohocken, PA USA www.astm.org
ASTM D1003 defines how to measure transmittance haze or wide angle scatter of transparent solids and liquids. Light scattering can be caused by surface abrasion or internal scattering centers.
