# USDA Approval of LabScan XE Tomato and ColorFlex EZ Tomato Meters

In 2003 HunterLab went through a USDA/UCDavis qualification for two new sensors – the LabScan XE Tomato Meter and the ColorFlex Tomato Meter as well as a requalification for the D25A-9000. The coefficients used in the original equations were modified slightly to accommodate slight differences in the optical path of these new sensors and make them read the same as the original 1980 D25A-9 on processed tomato products – paste/purée, sauce, catsup and juice.

Approved July 10, 2003 USDA Tomato Scores for the HunterLab LabScan XE Tomato Meter:

• HunterLab LabScan XE TPS = - 40.926 + 1.061(a) + 9.473(b) - 0.376(b^2)
• HunterLab LabScan XE TSS = - 149.176 + 1.139(a) + 21.608(b) - 0.826(b^2)
• HunterLab LabScan XE TCS = - 81.964 + 8.321(a) - 0.142(a^2) - 1.129(b)
• HunterLab LabScan XE TJS = 25.114 + 0.939(a) - 1.638(b)
• Fresh Tomato Color Index FTCI = (100((21.6/L) - (7.5*b/(L*a)))
• a/b ratio = a/b
