Saybolt and ASTM D1500 Color – a quick explanation of the difference Follow
The visual Saybolt and ASTM D1500 Color scales can be used individually or in tandem to rank low and high chroma petroleum-based products by color.
Saybolt Color scale is used for slightly yellowish but low chroma petroleum products such as mineral oil, kerosene, gasoline, naphtha, aviation fuels, white petroleum waxes and pharmaceutical white oils.
The visual Saybolt Color scale is defined in ASTM D156 Standard Test Method for Saybolt Color of Petroleum Products (Saybolt Chromometer Method).
The visual ASTM D1500 Color scale (also called "D1500" or "ASTM Color") is applied to the higher chroma or more colorful petroleum products such as lubricants, additives and oil.
The visual “ASTM Color” or “D1500 Color” is defined by ASTM D1500 Standard Test Method for ASTM Color of Petroleum Products (ASTM Color Scale).
The instrumental correlations in HunterLab EasyMatch QC software to both of these color scales conforms to ASTM D6045 Standard Test Method for Color of Petroleum Products by the Automatic Tristimulus Method which describes the instrumental correlation to the visual Saybolt and ASTM D1500 color scales.
A standard 50-mm transmittance cell (HunterLab Part # 13-8573-20) is required to measure the Saybolt Color of low chroma oil or petrochemical samples, and a 33-mm transmittance cell (HunterLab Part # B04-1003-801 Transmittance Cell, 33-mm) is required to measure high chroma D1500 Color.
Appropriate options are capped versions of these cells to better handle volatiles - a capped 50-mm transmittance cell (HunterLab Part # D12-1011-892) for Saybolt Color and a capped 33-mm transmittance cell (HunterLab Part # D12-1011-891) Transmittance Cell, 33-mm) for D1500 Color.
Both cells fit in the transmittance compartments of ColorQuest XT, ColorQuest XE, UltraScan VIS and UltraScan PRO instruments using the standard Transmittance Cell Holder (HL# C02-1005-481). HunterLab
The 33 mm path length transmittance cell will fit in the transmission compartments of ColorQuest XT, ColorQuest XE, UltraScan VIS and UltraScan PRO instruments using the standard Transmittance Cell Holder (HL# C02-1005-481). HunterLab also offers a version of the transmittance cell holder that incorporates a Transmittance Spill Tray and Cell Holder (HL# D02-1011-568), a transmittance cell holder that incorporates a spill for accident situations.
Measurement Method for Saybolt Color
- Standardize the HunterLab d/8 sphere instrument in TTRAN mode (Total Transmission, LAV – Large Area of View, UV Filter Nominal) using the appropriate 50 mm path length cell filled with distilled water.
- Read back the cell filled with water as a PQ Performance Qualification step to make sure that the instrument is set up correctly and performance qualified to continue reading samples.
- Saybolt Color for distilled water read back in the 50-mm cell after TTRAN LAV standardization should read 30 closely with L* = 100.0, a* = 0, b* = 0 D65/10.
If the PQ read back of DI water matches expected values, then you are performance qualified to proceed to read low chroma petrochemical samples.
Measure near colorless liquid petrochemical samples and report CIE L*, a*, b* D65/10 and Saybolt-50/100mm Color values.
Measurement Method for ASTM D1500 Color
Configure EasyMatch QC software to display ASTM D1500 Color.
Standardize the HunterLab d/8 sphere instrument in TTRAN Total Transmittance mode using 33 mm path length cell filled with distilled water.
Read back the cell filled with water as a PQ Performance Qualification step to make sure that the instrument is set up correctly and performance qualified to continue reading samples. .
ASTM D1500 Color for distilled water read back in the 33-mm cell after TTRAN LAV standardization should read 0.3 closely with L* = 100.0, a* = 0, b* = 0 D65/10.
If the PQ read back of DI water is matches expected values, then you are performance qualified to proceed to read high chroma oil, petrochemical samples.
Measure high chroma liquid petroleum chemical samples and report CIE L*, a*, b* D65/10 and ASTM D1500-33mm Color values.
