Purpose: To review the measurement of APHA/Pt-Co and Gardner Color in Glass Vials.
Measuring transmittance color in vials is most useful for liquids that are corrosive, volatile or need to be heated. In addition to CIE L*, a*, b* D65/10 color values, APHA and Gardner Color are often needed.
Clients will need both the vials and vial holder. Vials are the same diameter but vary in length for 20 ml, 40 ml and 60 ml volumes. The 40 ml is recommended as the default size with 20 ml appropriate if low volume is required and 60 ml better for handling hot liquids.

Clear, round 24 mm (0.94 in) ID, molded, borosilicate glass vial with dimensions of 27.5 OD x 140 mm high (1.08 in OD x 5.51 in high) that requires a minimum 20 ml of sample for measurement but can hold up to 60 ml. This size is easy to grasp with tongs when being heated up 250C. Comes with black polypropylene screw on tops with a PTFE disc liner to contain volatiles and prevent spills. This CMR allows the display of an instrumental measurement of APHA and Gardner Color in disposable 24-mm ID glass vials that allow heating and capping for volatiles. Requires D02-1011-550 Transmittance Holder for 27 - 30-mm OD round glass Vials and 24-mm ID glass vials from a third part source.
Basic Measurement Method for APHA/Pt-Co and Gardner Color in 24mm ID Glass Vials
- Fit D02-1011-550 Transmittance Holder in the transmittance compartment of the instrument.
- Fill 24 mm ID vial with distilled water.
- Standardize diffuse d/8 sphere instrument in (TTRAN) Total Transmittance, LAV, UVF Nominal mode using the vial + DI water as top-of-scale standard.
- As a PQ Performance Qualification step, read back the DI Water as a product standard or sample. It should read L* = 100, a* = 0, b* = 0 D65/10; APHA/Pt-Co = 0, Gardner = 0.
- As an optional PQ step, an APHA/Pt-Co or Gardner liquid standard could be read, expecting close agreement to assigned values.
- Re-fill vial with liquid product sample, place at holder and make a measurement.
- Record data.
