Technology Highlights

What makes Agera L2 “reference-grade” is not one feature alone, but the integration of true CIE-calibrated D65 daylight, enhanced low-reflectance performance, a significantly expanded area of view, intelligent embedded computing, and an optical architecture designed for years of stable operation. Together, these capabilities provide unmatched ability to measure color the way it is seen—accurately, consistently, and repeatably.

CIE Calibrated D65 Source Illumination

Illumination is the foundation of color measurement.

Agera L2 introduces CIE-calibrated TrueD65 illumination with controlled, calibrated UV—something most instruments only approximate. By reproducing the full visible and UV structure of D65 with precision, Agera L2 ensures that instrumental color measurements align with what is seen in simulated daylight, such as a lighting booth, and under natural daylight conditions. The result is greater confidence, consistency, and global correlation, reducing rework and approval delays. With TrueD65, visual and instrumental agreement becomes reliably dependable.

Precise Near UV Measurement

Ultraviolet (UV) energy is an integral part of natural daylight, and the Agera L2 accurately captures the visible-excited fluorescence—the characteristic glow emitted by bright whites, optical brightening agents (OBAs), and safety colors when illuminated by UV light—as it truly appears in real-world viewing conditions. The result is color data that correlates seamlessly between the laboratory, the daylight viewing booth, and the retail environment. This verified daylight and UV fidelity ensures color confidence, tighter supplier alignment, and fewer discrepancies across the supply chain.

Ultra Dark Mode

Many manufacturing environments involve materials with inherently low reflectance—deep chromatic plastics, low-gloss coatings, masterbatch, elastomers, specialty inks, and carbon-loaded compounds.

Ultra Dark Mode expands Agera L2’s capabilities into the lowest reflectance ranges, enabling accurate, stable color measurement of deep blacks, navies, and saturated pigments that challenge conventional instruments. Ultra Dark Mode automatically optimizes illumination and integration to enhance signal-to-noise ratio, ensuring repeatable, trustworthy color data even for the darkest materials. Results are reported in the on-board EasyMatch Essentials L2 software

0°/45°c Circumferential geometry

The HunterLab Agera L2 employs 0°/45°c Circumferential geometry, the industry’s most visually correlated configuration for measuring color as the human eye perceives it. In this geometry, the sample is illuminated perpendicularly at 0° while reflected light is collected at 45° by 15 optical sensors from a full 360° circle around the sample. This design eliminates directional bias caused by surface texture, gloss, or grain orientation—ensuring that the measured color matches what an observer sees.

Largest Measured Area in Its Class

Agera L2 measures 4× more surface area than typical benchtop instruments, reducing the effect of texture, grain, directionality, and pattern variation. Large, textured, or patterned samples—WPCs, engineering plastics, coated metals, granites, textiles—can shift color dramatically when measured through a tiny aperture. Agera L2 captures more of the surface, delivering truer averages and higher Sigma repeatability.

Integrated 60° Gloss

Gloss dramatically affects how color is perceived. The Agera L2 features an integrated 60° gloss meter, conforming to international standards ASTM D523 and ISO 2813. 60-degree gloss is the default universal angle most widely used for plastics and general industrial surfaces. With the Agera L2 you don’t just get separate color and gloss readings—you get simultaneous acquisition of reflectance color (0°/45° geometry) and 60° gloss in the same measurement event. This means that gloss is recorded and tied to the color data. The result?: fewer second-guesses, faster approval cycles, and better global alignment of appearance across suppliers, plants and brands.

High Resolution Imaging

The HunterLab Agera L2 features an integrated high-resolution imaging system that provides real-time visual confirmation of every measurement. This advanced system is built around a 2592 × 1944 (5 MP) active-array sensor with a 1/4" optical format and 1.4 µm × 1.4 µm pixel size, delivering crisp detail and exceptional clarity and consistent, reliable imaging even on dark, matte, or low-reflectance materials. Automatic exposure control, auto white balance, automatic black-level calibration, and LED/flash-strobe support ensure that every captured image is accurately lit and visually consistent across material types, operators, and environment, allowing users to verify proper sample positioning, detect contamination or texture irregularities, and document visual appearance alongside numeric color data.

Onboard EasyMatch Essentials™ L2 Software

At the core of the Agera L2 is HunterLab EasyMatch Essentials L2, the powerful onboard software that delivers a complete, self-contained environment for measurement, data management, and report generation—all without the need for an external computer. Pre-installed within the instrument, it enables fast setup, streamlined workflow, and secure local data storage directly from the touchscreen interface. For enhanced analysis or large-format viewing, the Agera L2 connects directly to an external monitor via USB—expanding the workspace for side-by-side data comparison, collaborative reviews, or operator training.

Multiple instruments can be networked across plants and QA labs, ensuring centralized data capture and closed-loop color management within global quality systems.

Rugged Design for Real-World Reliability

The HunterLab Agera L2 is built for reliability and longevity in real-world production environments. Its sealed optical engine and fully enclosed housing protect critical components from dust, powders, and accidental spills—conditions that are common when measuring paints, coatings, chemicals, plastics, and other industrial materials. By isolating the optics and electronics from environmental contamination, the Agera L2 maintains calibration stability and optical precision over years of use, even in high-traffic laboratories or harsh manufacturing settings. This rugged, low-maintenance design ensures consistent, trouble-free performance whether the instrument is used in a clean lab or directly on the production floor.

Essentials TotalView 360° Auto Rotator Accessory

The Essentials TotalView 360° Auto Rotator Accessory (PN# L02-1021-858) provides complete 360° color evaluation of textured, directional, or non-uniform samples. The integrated sample clamp automatically rotates the specimen on the rotating port plate in 5° increments—up to 72 positions—capturing color at each orientation for true, comprehensive surface analysis. It then calculates mean color values to deliver the true average color, not just a single-angle snapshot. By automating this process, the system shortens time-to-decision, improves measurement precision, and eliminates repetitive manual repositioning. Ideal for heterogeneous materials, it converts complex surface behavior into clear, quantifiable color data.
