Illuminant D65 is the most commonly used standard daylight illuminant in color measurement. Developed by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE), D65 represents average midday daylight under typical outdoor conditions and serves as one of the primary reference light sources used for calculating and reporting color values. In many industries, D65 has become the default illuminant for color measurement, color communication, and color quality control.

When measuring color, a spectrophotometer does not simply record the color of a sample. Instead, it measures how the sample reflects or transmits light across the visible spectrum. To predict how that sample will appear to a human observer, the measured spectral data must be evaluated under a defined light source. This is where illuminants come into play. An illuminant provides a standardized mathematical representation of a light source, allowing color measurements to be calculated consistently regardless of where or when the measurement is performed.

D65 is intended to represent natural daylight with a correlated color temperature of approximately 6500 Kelvin. It contains a balanced distribution of energy across the visible spectrum and closely approximates the lighting conditions under which many products are viewed in everyday life. Because of its broad acceptance and relevance to real-world viewing conditions, D65 is widely used throughout industries such as plastics, packaging, coatings, textiles, paper, consumer products, and many other color-critical applications.

One of the strengths of spectrophotometric measurement is that the same spectral data can be evaluated under multiple illuminants. This allows manufacturers to predict how a product will appear under different lighting conditions without physically remeasuring the sample. For example, a product may appear to match perfectly under D65 daylight conditions but exhibit noticeable color differences under store lighting, office lighting, or residential lighting. This phenomenon is known as metamerism and is one reason why illuminant selection is an important consideration in color quality control.

While D65 is the most common illuminant used today, it is not the only illuminant available. Other illuminants such as A, C, D50, F2, F7, F11, and LED-based illuminants may be used depending on the application, industry, or customer requirements. The choice of illuminant should reflect the conditions under which the product will ultimately be viewed and evaluated.

Understanding D65 is important because color values are not absolute—they are always calculated relative to a defined light source and observer. Specifying D65 ensures that color measurements can be communicated consistently across organizations, facilities, and supply chains.

A sample does not have a single fixed appearance. The color you see depends on the light illuminating the sample. D65 provides a standardized daylight reference that allows manufacturers around the world to calculate and communicate color consistently.

One of the most common misunderstandings in color measurement is assuming that color values exist independently of viewing conditions. In reality, every reported color value is tied to a specific illuminant and observer. This is why a complete color specification should always include the measurement conditions used to calculate the data.

For many industrial applications, D65 has become the preferred illuminant because it closely represents the daylight conditions under which products are often viewed. However, the "best" illuminant is not always D65. Products intended for retail environments, office settings, residential lighting, or specialized applications may require evaluation under additional illuminants to ensure acceptable appearance under actual use conditions.

A Practical Example

Consider a white plastic bottle that appears bright and neutral outdoors. When brought inside under fluorescent or LED lighting, the same bottle may appear slightly yellow, blue, or gray. The bottle itself has not changed—only the lighting has changed. By evaluating color data under standardized illuminants such as D65, manufacturers can predict and control appearance differences before products reach the customer.
